Anderson and Alucard property of Kohta Hirano and Affiliates. Everyone else, property of me.
---

Anderson casually walked around the dark orphanage, doing his nightly duty of locking all the windows and doors. Pale moonlight filtered through the tall windows, giving off just enough light to allow him to see nearly everything. Then again, that could be because...

The priest shook his head as he latched the window, hoping to shake the thought as well. It had been six months since returning to the orphanage. During the first weeks of return, he spoke very little and smiled only when the children were around so as not to upset them with his own troubled expression. It was in that time that he feared the worse; he feared he was becoming a vampire. He didn’t know how it would work with his regenerative capabilities, so it may have been going slower than normal.

Since then, in the privacy of his room, he checked his teeth and eyes daily. No change. Most importantly, he had no craving for blood. The only change was his eye sight. It hadn’t returned to his normal vision since then. He still wore the frame of his glasses; if anyone else noticed, they said nothing.

“Hey, Father Anderson! I just finished this side of the building, so I’m heading up to bed.” The priest turned at his name to see Brother Christopher across the large dining hall of the orphanage walking toward the main room. Anderson lifted his hand in a small wave. “A'right Brother. 'ave a good night an' God bless.”

“God bless, Father.” Christopher opened the door as strolled out of the room, the last sound being the quiet ‘click’ of the door. Anderson handled the doors and the left side of the first floor, as well as checking the fire escape. The latter wasn’t something he was required to do, simply something he insisted on. It was really just a simple set of stairs separated from the rest of the building. If the fire alarms were ever triggered, the fire escape would automatically unlock.

He’d just finished locking the middle door when he heard a thump behind him. He shot a glance back behind him. The long tables and benches used for meal times were still set up, making many impenetrable shadows around the room. He glanced around a bit more, then took a deep breath.

Probably one of the children still awake. He’d have to go and check once he was done. He locked the next two windows and the last door, when he heard another thump. Anderson jumped and spun around to look at the corner that it came from.

"...Christopher?" He asked quietly to the unanswering darkness. No response and no noise again. If those were the children, he'd certainly have them pray an hour each tomorrow for staying up so late. He proceeded to enter the stairwell and check the outside door. It was locked. He had just re-entered the hall when the thump sounded again, except in the adjacent corner.

He sunk quickly into a low crouch, looking into any dark corners in his view. That certainly was not coming from upstairs. Staying low, he crept slowly over to the corner. Another thump; this close, he could tell it was coming from underneath one of the end tables. Unfortunately, the table cloth obscured the view all the way down to the floor. Silently, he moved toward the table. He could definitely hear something now. Anderson carefully grabbed one end of the table cloth, then tore it aside in one swift motion.

A large, black rat squeaked and skittered into a small hole in the closest wall. In a loud sigh of relief, he sat on the floor with his arm on the closest bench and put his head in his hand, his eyes closed. Six months ago, he wouldn't have been this paranoid. Trying to calm down, he muttered a phrase that came to mind. "Those who consecrate an' purify 'emselves to go int'eh the gardens, followin' the one in the midst 'a those who eat the flesh o' pigs an' rats an' other abominable things," he slowly sat up, "they will meet their end--"

"Together."

Anderson snapped his head up at the deep voice that finished for him. Alucard stood there in his red jacket and white, embroidered gloves, grinning slightly. It was only for a moment; just long enough for the priest to get one syllable out, before the vampire vanished. Angel Dust Anderson stood there in shock. Was that Alucard? Was he seeing things? Was he here? How could he be here; he protected this orphanage himself with sacred symbol and scripture. The paladin growled softly. He hated this. Standing up fully, he looked around, his hands curled into tight fists. "Alucard! Where are you?! Show ye' self!"

Nothing. Simply the darkness. Was he really seeing things? Anderson gave a deep sigh. Maybe he was just tired. He turned his back on the room and exited the hall, then started walking up the stairs. While on the second floor, he paused a moment. In front of him was the boy's dormitory. Taking a moment, he slowly opened the door, being sure it didn't creek. Dante slept soundly in the bed closest to the door. Part of Anderson still couldn't forgive himself for letting Dante getting hurt. Admittedly, he did watch Dante closer than any of the other children. At least he was safe now.

Anderson closed the door quietly and continued to the third floor where his room was. It was a simple hallway with doors to the other clergy member's rooms. His own was the last on the right, which he now turned the handle on. To his right, he heard a dark, low laugh. Alucard's. He quickly looked right. It had stopped. Nothing there. Once more he sighed and mumbled that he was tired.

He entered his room and shut the door. He quickly got out of his cassock till he was just in his boxers and fell into bed, pulling the sheets over him. He stayed up for another uneventful hour, simply trying to go to sleep, till he finally succeeded.
